Northwestern Medicine Employee Volunteer Hub Gives Back in Record-Breaking 2023

Northwestern Medicine is committed to building stronger communities by removing barriers to better health. Team NM, the workforce volunteer hub, has played a key role in this work this year by connecting employees and physicians with volunteer opportunities.

Investing in Communities

In fiscal year 2023, Team NM donated more than 9,400 hours of service across Chicago and Northern Illinois. Some notable highlights include:

  • 477 volunteer events, up 300 over the previous record set in fiscal year 2022
    • 131 volunteer events, or nearly 3 in 10 Team NM events, were connected to the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network
    • 109 events were opportunities for teams to volunteer as a group while bonding as colleagues
  • 4,031 volunteers
    • 3,081 Northwestern Medicine workforce members
    • 950 family members and friends of the Northwestern Medicine workforce
  • 135 partner organizations supported

Volunteer opportunities and community partners are chosen to help build and strengthen relationships among the Northwestern Medicine workforce and communities. Some of those community health priorities are related to social determinants of health, such as access to stable housing, nutritious food and physical activity.

“Our volunteers are supporting and amplifying the work of our amazing community partners,” says Posh Charles, senior vice president, Administration. “Together, we are maximizing our ability to reduce health disparities beyond what can be done in our hospitals and other care settings.”

Building a Meaningful Presence

Team NM has also been concentrating its efforts in areas where volunteers can have the most impact.

For example, in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, Team NM volunteers supported 20 events throughout fiscal year 2023. Volunteers completed beautification projects; supported community events; packed and distributed PPE, cleaning supplies and groceries to seniors; and more.

“We are really demonstrating that we are invested in the communities we serve,” says Shannon McCall, program manager for Team NM. “We are coming back every month, and we are working to have a meaningful presence in the places that we go.”

Volunteer events are open to all members of the Northwestern Medicine workforce, and most events also welcome friends and family members.
