Northwestern Medicine Nurse Named National Magnet Nurse of the Year

At Northwestern Medicine, clinicians are not just unique: They are also at the top of their field.

Kathy Trimble, APRN, who works in the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Program at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital, was honored as a 2023 National Magnet Nurse of the Year® by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in the category of Exemplary Professional Practice.

“We have been continuously inspired by Kathy’s dedication to maintaining close, trusting bonds with every and family member like they were her own,” says Laura Petrando, APRN, director of Outpatient Pediatrics at Ann & Robert H. “Her genuine passion for treating the most complex and vulnerable patients is evident in the work she does every day.”

Care With Compassion

ANCC recognizes outstanding contributions of clinical nurses in each of the five Magnet® Model components, which include:

  • Exemplary Professional Practice
  • Transformational Leadership
  • Structural Empowerment
  • New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvements
  • Empirical Outcomes

Trimble says the support she has received at Northwestern Medicine has been invaluable in helping her develop her professional skills and career over the years.

“Northwestern Medicine leadership has been supportive of me for the past 22 years,” she explains. “With every nursing research project I proposed, I was enthusiastically supported by leadership and my team. I could not be the nurse I am today without all of the support I have received.”

Dedication to Improvement

In addition to providing excellent passionate care, Trimble has played a critical role in enhancing quality and safety in patient care by:

  • Developing and leading a multidisciplinary Pediatric Oncology Quality Committee
  • Collaborating with the Central DuPage Hospital Emergency Department to help maintain positive outcomes
  • Educating pediatric oncology nurses at Central DuPage Hospital in providing chemotherapy while championing equal access to treatment for patients

Trimble says that she while she is honored to be awarded, she is even more grateful for the recognition from her nursing team and leaders.

“In caring for children with cancer, my goal is to always make that day easier for the patients and families, whether it be by education, coordination or support,” says Trimble. “I try to be a role model for my peers by providing education, mentoring and support. I love being a pediatric hematology oncology nurse, and I hope that by my actions, this is evident every day.”
