Description
Under the general supervision of the Lead Ultrasound Technologist, produces images and/or diagnostic tests of designated anatomical areas as requested in order to provide the Radiologists with diagnostic information.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review procedure requisitions for appropriateness, document order completion in logs and Hospital Information System.
- Document pertinent patient information according to department policies. Includes procedure specific forms and history assessment.
- Provide explanation of procedure, discharge information, and expectations of test completion and availability of results.
- Operate imaging equipment according to established procedures, (Ultrasound units and non-invasive physiologic units.)
- Prepare images for interpretation by completing required printing and post processing protocols for appropriate archive retention.
- Utilize appropriate immobilization and safety techniques to protect patients from safety risks.
- Meet the individual physical and mental needs of patients during procedures including comfort, privacy, confidentiality and timely communication.
- Perform equipment calibrations and quality control testing.
- Maintain work area and equipment by proper use, routine cleaning, and ensuring there are adequate supplies.
- Maintain skills and knowledge to provide care appropriate to the age and ability of each patient.
- Assist patients, family members, physicians, visitors, and employees in a friendly, cooperative manner.
- Assist student technologists during assignment to clinical rotation.
- Follow infection control procedures at all times.
- Follow hospital policies for safety. Complies with specific department responsibilities during fire drills or alarms.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Perform daily inspection of disinfection system in accordance with department policy.
- Responsible for prompt reporting of any malfunction of equipment to supervisors.
Specifications:
- Mental Effort: Significant mental alertness is necessary at all times to assure that the appropriate procedures are performed and assessing the proper techniques to be used. Must be able to handle fluctuations in workflow and handling critically ill patients.
- Physical Effort: Considerable physical effort is required in positioning patients as well as lifting, carrying, and positioning of equipment and supplies. Requires ability to move equipment to bedside. High degree of visual concentration is required when performing Ultrasound procedures.
- Independent Judgment: Technologist must adhere to established policies and procedures as well as written orders of the physician. The technologist must recognize and appropriately interpret policies and assure quality care and safety of the patient in various situations.
- Supervisory Responsibility: In the absence of the supervisor, it may be necessary for the technologist to take charge and be responsible for the operation of the Ultrasound section.
- Consequence of Errors: Financial loss may occur if the technologist does not function in the appropriate manner, or is not aware of his/her responsibility. Errors may result in financial loss to the hospital or patient injury.
- Confidential Information: Works regularly with confidential information relating to both patient and employees. Must follow hospital policies regarding confidentiality.
- Working Conditions: Works in a comfortable, well lighted air-conditioned environment, some exposure to communicable and contagious disease; must follow appropriate standard precautions.
- Public Relations: Position will interact on a routine basis with staff from the hospital with an emphasis placed on customer service for our physicians, employees, and patients. Contact with physicians, suppliers/vendors and patients require professional, courteous interactions at all times.
- Customer Service: Priority will be given to maintaining a positive experience for patients and other people the employee encounters. Employee is expected to handle all responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with Palos Community Hospital’s mission.
This position is full-time, 80 hours per pay period, evening shift, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with alternating weekends and holidays.
Qualifications
Required:
- Must be registered or registry eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Physics and RVT within 12 months of hire.
- Must be registered or registry eligible by in Abdomen, or OB/GYN.
- If registry eligible, must obtain registry in Physics and one specialty within 12 months of hire.
- If registered in Physics and one specialty, must obtain second specialty within six months of hire.
- Must be CPR certified.
- Physical Demand Requirement:
- Physical demands required for this role include lift/carry up to 50 pounds and a push/pull force up to 50 pounds
