Description

The Lead Perfusionist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate cardiopulmonary bypass circuit throughout surgical procedures as directed by surgeons.
  • Chart patient's vital parameters on perfusion record at regular intervals.
  • Communicate to surgeon and anesthesiologist any problems, unusual occurrences, or deviation from the norm which may affect the patient while on bypass.
  • Operate cell-salvaging system in the operating room.
  • Retrieve, process, and return shed blood back to the patient.
  • Set up and operate intra-aortic balloon pump in the OR and as patient is transported to the ICU area.
  • Set up and operate cardiac assist devices (LVAD's, Abiomed,) (HeartMate) while patient is in the OR.
  • Set up and calibrate CDI blood management system prior to initiating bypass.
  • Must be able to take call coverage for cardiac and transplant procedures on a rotating basis with colleagues.
  • Set up and operate PBS (portable bypass system) and be able to initiate bypass anywhere in the medical center.
  • Supervise staff perfusionist and cell salvaging technicians to insure competency in the performance of their duties.
  • Assign call coverage to perfusionist and cell salvaging techs to provide 24-hour coverage for these services.
  • Communicate with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery in determining which perfusion techniques will have the greatest benefits for our patients.
  • Evaluate new equipment/technology and make recommendations based on cost effectiveness, supply utilization, patient benefits and surgeon requests.
  • Make recommendations to Manager, Perfusionist (also known as the Chief Perfusionist) for capital equipment planning.
  • Maintain an ongoing awareness of new techniques and research to improve patient outcomes.
  • Support continued growth of cardiac surgery and perfusion program by accessing current status and making recommendations for future expansion.
  • Maintain heart/lung bypass machines are in clean and functional working order at all times.
  • Order supplies which are not kept in general stores.
  • Assist ECMO Coordinator when applicable.
  • Communicate daily with nursing staff, other medical personnel, Manager (Chief Perfusionist), ORSC, Operating Room Manager and Materials Management to coordinate patient needs.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited perfusion school.
  • Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Licensed Perfusionist.
  • CCP certification.

Preferred:

  • >10 years as a clinical perfusionist.
