Description
**This is a Part Time position at 24 hours per week located at the Glenview clinic for Mohs Surgery.**
The Histology Technician reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Histology Technician provides technical and clinical support for various physicians and sub-specialists by performing histology related laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and follow up of patients with various health conditions. This position acts as a liaison between the physicians and staff by answering questions and providing educational assistance.
Responsibilities:
- Under the directorship of the Mohs surgeon performs frozen tissue preparations for microscopic examination.
- Properly identifies and orients tissue.
- Uses Mohs frozen section technique to orient, map, freeze, cut, and stain frozen tissue sections.
- Recognizes adequacy of cryo-sectioning.
- Labels specimens as appropriate.
- Operates automated instrumentation to stain microscopic slides.
- Evaluates stains microscopically for acceptable results.
- Identifies and corrects staining deficiencies.
- Performs manual methods during instrument downtimes.
- Recognizes, resolves, and documents unacceptable staining and cover slipping results and/or instrument failure.
- Maintains logbook of Mohs specimens as well as other manual and electronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary.
- Records all documentation consistently and legibly in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Responsible for maintaining Quality Control and Quality Assurance documentation to assure compliance with CLIA regulations.
- Prioritizes technical workload based on assignment or established priorities, responds effectively to changes in workflow adjusting work to incorporate STAT requests or fluctuations in work volume.
- Cleans, disinfects, performs, and documents routine equipment and instrument per SOP.
- Monitors laboratory inventory to ensure supply levels are appropriate and adequate.
- Notifies coordinator promptly of any supply issues.
- Fosters department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication.
- Participates in Safety and Infection Control activities.
- Follows all required safety procedures, assumes a proactive role in laboratory safety.
- Assists in cleaning, wrapping and sterilization of instruments.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of clinical supplies.
- Assist in clerical duties such as scanning of patients’ records into EMR.
- Takes initiative for personal development by attending teleconferences, educational sessions, and required meetings, etc.
- Possesses motivation, self-reliance, initiative, a team player.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Zero (0) to two (2) years’ experience in a relevant role.
- Previous experience in molecular laboratories (in situ hybridization, polymerase chain reaction).
Preferred:
- One of the following:
- BS degree or higher in biological science
- Associate's degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
- Have education and training that includes 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that includes 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses
- 24 semester hours that include 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
- HT(ASCP) American Society for Clinical Pathology Histotechnician certification or complete once eligible.
- Experience in immunohistochemistry and tissue processing
