The salary range for this position is $75.70 - $105.98 (Hourly Rate)

Placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors such as relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

The Program Director Strategy & Business Development reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards

This high-level, individual contributor position has responsibilities for directing design and production of analyses and strategic planning efforts throughout the organization.  Responsibilities include: leading strategic planning initiatives, managing major business development projects, supporting corporate development projects, and researching and presenting relevant business intelligence. The Program Director will prepare didactic business plans and conduct complex business modeling exercises to guide program expansion and optimal service mix, as well as project future growth and service demand.  The Program Director will also evaluate and monitor existing programs, assess strategic positioning, and research “leading practices,” both in and outside of the healthcare industry. 

A Program Director Strategy & Business Development. . .

  • Works closely with senior leadership (i.e. vice presidents, medical leaders), as well as directors, managers, and physician leaders, to define growth projects and build consensus that results in complete plans that are in alignment with the Northwestern Medicine (NM) strategic plan and annual goals. 
  • Manages projects and supervises departmental staff as assigned by a Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development, as well as supports departmental priorities for staff development, process improvement, and enhancement of departmental functions. 
  • Leads processes that successfully contribute to the NM strategic plan and overall mission of NMHC, and exemplifies and demonstrates the organization’s values and competencies needed to be effective in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and pursues business activities which align with the NM strategic plan, enhance quality, service and reputation, market and clinical leadership, expand clinical programming and access, improve financial performance, and enhance capability in assigned programs.
  • Manages, develops, and facilitates new business and programmatic ideas and plans for assigned areas.  Analyzes growth potential, resource requirements, risk/reward, and financial benefit to proposed initiatives through complex analysis and research of market, quality, service, financial, and internal factors.   Develops demand (market and internal) and financial projections in key business and service areas.
  • Oversees preparation of standard reports, develops Board-level presentations, and conducts ad-hoc analyses.
  • Maintains and continually updates industry and competitor information, and NM relative performance in assigned program areas, including historic and leading industry benchmarking data on: quality and outcomes of care, patient satisfaction, market size and share, performance relative to competition, reputation, clinical and research capabilities, program and technology components, operational experience, and leadership and differentiation.
  • Forms, facilitates and leads complex, multi-departmental strategic planning processes in assigned business and program areas. Successfully involves vice presidents, clinical site leaders, regional leaders, medical leaders, other managers, and physicians to build consensus on strategies.
  • Leads corporate planning projects related to future partners, facilities, technologies, resources, and other NM system-wide opportunities.
  • Proposes, analyzes and implements new strategic initiatives, such as off-site campus development and affiliations and partnerships with other businesses and organizations to develop new and existing product lines/service groups and business models.
  • Completes business (program) plans for departments and strategic plans for the NM system.
  • Collaborates with others to develop, implement, and manage internal measurement and monitoring systems that demonstrate the effectiveness of business initiatives in enhancing patient care, access, volumes, market share, financial performance, and program reputation within assigned areas.
  • Gathers and analyzes business intelligence to assess future resource requirements, including but not limited to building investments, equipment, staffing, technological capability, and information resources.
  • Works closely with key managers and physicians to complete plans and recommendations, under sponsorship of a vice president and oversight by a Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development. 
  • Highly responsive and effective in working with operational managers and physicians, defining projects effectively, and meeting client and organizational strategic objectives simultaneously. 
  • Through relationship development throughout the NM community, identifies and secures interdepartmental support and other resources necessary for successful origination and implementation of business strategy initiatives. Works closely with operational staff and managers to assure successful transition to implementation of approved initiatives.
  • Responsible for meeting goals in a timely and cost effective manner. Held accountable through performance goals, incentive plans, and other monitoring systems.
  • Prepares business (program) plans, financial analysis, feasibility studies and pro formas, including gathering reimbursement and cost information.
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge in available data sources and analytic capabilities. Identifies opportunities to streamline and continuously improve analytic processes. Institutes quality assurance procedures to ensure validity of internal, competitor, and market data.
  • Makes effective hiring decisions; completes the 90-day review and orientation process for new employees.
  • Identifies staff's individual skills and interests; provides timely, positive, constructive feedback; addresses performance gaps as they occur with clear action plans and timelines for improvement.
  • Creates an environment of partnership, collaboration, seamless quality, and service enhancement across teams, departments, and divisions of the organization.
  • Supports ongoing learning and skill development for self and team members. Encourages those who identify problems, potential solutions, and opportunities for improvement. Supports and empowers team members in piloting new ideas and solutions.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Advanced degree (i.e.: Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Health Administration (MHA)), with healthcare planning, strategy, and business development experience
  • experience working within a clinical environment
  • demonstrated organizational and leadership skills
  • excellent analytical skills. 

Preferred:

  • 10 or more years of healthcare planning, strategy, and business development experience.
  • Experience in hospital, academic medical center, physician group, and/or healthcare provider consulting setting is preferred; experience working closely with physicians in a provider setting is highly desired.
