Description

The Phlebotomist Lead reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Phlebotomist Lead is to provide support and leadership to the phlebotomists with their phlebotomy skills. The Phlebotomist Lead must be able to perform all tasks in phlebotomy services and specimen processing. The Phlebotomist Lead provides support to the General Laboratory Supervisor with training and procedure manual preservation

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the hiring, training, and evaluation for phlebotomy service personnel.
  • Teaches phlebotomy procedures to less-skilled personnel.
  • Provides coaching and performance improvement plans for Team members that are not meeting standards.
  • Serves as a role model by leading and developing staff with respect, and helping staff to hardwire our Values & Standards of Behavior.
  • Assists with communication and problem solving both intra- and interdepartmentally.
  • Performs all the duties of a phlebotomist.
  • Maintains proficiency as a phlebotomist.
  • Assists in providing for adequate staffing for phlebotomy services.
  • Provides coverage during phlebotomy absences and vacations.
  • Is flexible in order to cover all shifts and all phlebotomy areas.
  • Maintains and orders an appropriate organized inventory of supplies.
  • Assists with evaluating and recommending new procedures and technology.
  • Assists with revising and updating the phlebotomy training program.
  • Assists with maintaining and writing policies and procedures relating to phlebotomy services.
  • Provides for adequate communication between the phlebotomy personnel and laboratory management.
  • Promotes teamwork as an organizational approach to making quality and productivity improvements in the laboratory.
  • Assists the General Laboratory Supervisor as required.
  • Maintains and develops knowledge of laboratory CAP standards and assists laboratory management in compliance.
  • Brings any medically related concerns to the Laboratory Medical Director or his designee.
  • Maintains good communication with and receives direction from the General Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Manager, Medical Director and Administrative Laboratory Director.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Minimum five years hospital related phlebotomy experience
  • Exceptional phlebotomy skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Effective communication and decision making skills.

Preferred:

  • ASCP certification as a Phlebotomy Technician
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience
