The salary range for this position is $40.50 - $60.28 (Hourly Rate)

Description

The Charge Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assures that overall patient care within the department is provided in a patient-centered, efficient, healing environment.
  • Have authority, responsibility and accountability to assure that: 
    • The interdisciplinary team providing patient services within the department are meeting standards to achieve optimal patient outcomes within anticipated length of stay
    • Departmental and organizational goals are met.
    • Unit patient flow is optimized.
    • Appropriate patient placement
    • Equipment availability and maintenance
  • Successfully coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.
  • Recommends a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care and services.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
  • Continuously assesses and improves the department’s performance.
  • Develops and maintains budget; Searches for ways to improve financial performance.
  • Provides for orientation, in-service training, and continuing education of all persons in the department; Ensures that staff are training and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their roles.
  • Maintains appropriate quality control programs. In addition to the Registered Nurse Job Description, the Charge Nurse is responsible for the following job standards as they apply to the specific area.
  • Assures clinical quality, patient safety and positive patient outcomes
  • Maintains proactive approach to patient safety and quality of care
  • Oversees communication of all incoming diagnostic data, including critical test results
  • Monitors staff completion of safety reports for actual and potential errors
  • Assures that interdisciplinary team members are meeting standards of care:
  • Collaborates with off-going Charge Nurse
  • Assures handoff processes are followed
  • Maintains awareness and oversight of patients displaying potential indicators of instability/change in condition
  • Works collaboratively with Clinical Lead RN to assure timeliness of patient quality indicators and core measure needs.
  • Supports quality improvements
  • Monitors performance indicators
  • Rounds with staff to facilitate appropriate and timeliness of patient resources.  Identifies and removes barriers which interfere with timely patient flow.
  • Ensures completion of checks and balances that support patient safety and quality of care
  • Coordinates unit activity and patient flow
  • Oversees walking/bedside report in absence of Clinical Lead RN
  • Leads staff huddles at beginning and ending of shift
  • Prioritizes and facilitates activities to optimize admission and discharge processes
  • Prioritizes and facilitates flow of patient care to attain length of stay goals and positive patient outcomes
  • Facilitates communication of significant information to the Clinical Lead RN.
  • Resourceful in assisting department to meet financial goals by:
  • Managing the appropriate use of personnel, materials and supplies
  • Assessing staffing needs for current and upcoming shift to assure safe, cost-effective patient care
  • Collaborating with Clinical Lead and/or supervisor to meet staffing needs
  • Assist Clinical Lead in communicating fiscal goals and expectations to staff
  • Monitoring staff overtime and timely completion of shift duties
  • Provide supply oversight, assures adequate ordering and use of supplies. Seeks opportunities to reduce supply costs
  • Develops a positive work environment for staff and physicians
  • Provides feedback to Clinical Lead RN on staff performance for harvesting wins and contributing information to annual evaluations
  • Utilizes authority and responsibility for immediate corrective actions as necessary
  • Role models and facilitates shared decision-making, resolution of conflict, and teamwork among team members (by team members)
  • Develops positive working relationships with physicians and creates environment to optimize physician satisfaction
  • Provides effective service recovery to patients, visitors, staff and physicians
  • Rounds on patients and families
  • Coordinates intra- and interdepartmental communications
  • Supports organizational changes, goals and priorities
  • Patient Centered Care as appropriate to department, including oversight of walking/bedside report, length of stay approach, use of patient itinerary, staff huddle at beginning and end of shift
  • Coordination of patient flow to reduce wait times
  • Assists staff with clinical and unit responsibilities as needed
  • Contributes to professional development of staff
  • Acts as a resource and mentor for staff, coaching staff in skills and professional development
  • Participates in identifying educational needs and participates in training for unit staff

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum of two years of Clinical experience
  • Current Registered Nurse license with the State of Illinois
  • Basic Life Support certification
  • CPR – ACLS certification
  • CPR – PALS on Pediatric area

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Prior Charge experience
