The Manager, Workforce Health & Safety reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Manager, Workforce Health & Safetyprovides leadership and operational/program oversight of the Corporate Health Services team within a designated geographic region of Northwestern Medicine. Specific programs within this function include: Corporate Health Services, NM Workers’ Compensation Program, Employee Safety programs and initiatives, and the NM Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This position designs, develops, implements, evaluates and continuously improves NM’s workforce health, safety, and wellbeing programs with an emphasis on injury reduction and prevention while complying with all pertinent regulations, accreditations, and statutes. This role requires a self-motivated person who acts as a change agent, adapts quickly to new information and data and interacts effectively in a team environment.
- Manages the health, safety, and well-being initiatives of the NM Workforce in designated geographic region.
- Manages overall program operations that support the strategic objectives of Corporate Health Services. Sets explicit priorities, establishes effective action plans, and anticipates obstacles and alternatives for challenging but realistic work goals.
- Manages a team of workforce health and safety professionals who partner collaboratively with the functional areas across Northwestern Medicine in support of organizational and team objectives. Coordinates team resources for responsiveness to organizational priorities.
- Integrates workplace interventions that protect and advance the overall well-being of the workforce.
- Develops and manages processes and systems for collecting, analyzing and reporting data regarding employee injuries, illnesses, and exposures. Reviews employee injury data to prioritize initiatives and implement injury reduction strategies.
- Identifies root causes and risks for the workforce and works collaboratively with NM stakeholders to respond with appropriate policies, process improvements, training and mitigation strategies to ensure a safe work environment for employees, physicians, residents, students, visitors, and other campus partners.
- Stays abreast of occupational health and employee safety regulations, trends, benchmarks and best practice and incorporates new knowledge into organizational programs and plans.
- Fosters and maintains positive relationships employees, physicians and all levels of management.
- Responds thoroughly and promptly to customer needs and actively manages customer/peer relationships.
- Motivates stakeholders to adopt systems and process changes implemented during projects.
- Assures the department’s adherence to sound financial management practices and all applicable NM financial policies, through the development of conservative budgets and regular, systematic analysis of how funds are used, for both operational activity and capital projects.
- Fosters the development and maintenance of a cohesive, high-energy, collaborative, and quality-focused work team.
- Acts as a change agent to systematically drive and implement change throughout the organization in support of a “Safety Always” culture.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational/Environmental Health, Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field and/or comparable experience.
- Seven to ten (7-10) years progressive, relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated management experience with professional staff.
- Ability to supervise technical work involving reviews and evaluation, program development, and program planning and implementation.
- Proven experience organizing, planning, and executing large-scale projects from the conceptual stage through implementation.
- Rigorous analytical skills and persuasive leadership skills.
- Proven experience in managing cross-functional teams.
- Ability to recognize and implement opportunities for operational efficiencies while fostering a collaborative environment between all levels of the workforce.
- Communicates clearly, responsively, and purposely with all team members. Focuses on team success and promotes collaborative efforts with others. Shifts easily among different business, technical, clinical, and financial topics and project roles as required by situation.
- Innovative thinker who can lead multidisciplinary teams to a common goal using interpersonal skills, relationship building, trust, and integrity.
- Knowledge of OSHA standards and other relevant regulatory health and safety codes.
- Excellent critical thinking and judgment.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload.
- Flexible/adaptable – ability to work well with ambiguity.
- Proficient MS Excel, PowerPoint and Project user.
- Master Degree in Occupational/Environmental Health, Public Health, Business, or related field and/or comparable experience.
- Proven experience with process improvement methodologies, such as Lean, DMAIC or similar, particularly related to occupational injury reduction and workers’ compensation cost reduction.
- Experience within a healthcare or hospital setting.
